A Career Framework for Registered Nurses Document

Location: Regional

Closes: 15/10/2024

Nurses are central to the delivery of health care services and, therefore, key to achieving the changes required to meet the changing delivery of services and the health needs of patients and clients. Newly registered nurses, in hospital or community, are pivotal to supporting the implementation of that change.

NIPEC have compiled a suite of frameworks which are building blocks to support career progression and professional development. A Regional Group was set up to develop a regionally agreed Framework for Registered Nurses with agreement of competencies and educational requirements for these roles. A number of local and regional frameworks were reviewed and a preliminary view reached regarding competencies for the Staff Nurse and Senior Staff Nurse roles. These were written in the four pillars of Clinical Practice, Education & Learning, Leadership & Management and Research & Evidence Based Practice.

In order to ensure a robust document for Registered Nurses in the future, including career development pathways, a workshop was held earlier this year. Key stakeholders from across the region from all fields of nursing and all levels of nursing considered the draft competencies and helped us to develop the Framework to this final draft version.

The framework will be used by nurses to help them with their personal and professional skills and knowledge development and career progression.
