Invitation to Get Involved
We are keen to invite a service user to join the newly established Deconditioning Prevention Group (DPG). This is a valuable opportunity to share your views, experiences and ideas to help shape how we prevent deconditioning and support people to stay as active and independent as possible during their care.
Background
In January 2026, the Western Health and Social Care Trust launched ‘A Physically Active Trust’, an exciting initiative to make physical activity a therapeutic and cultural norm across all care settings. The aim is to reduce the risk of deconditioning and frailty, support recovery, and promote the wellbeing and vitality of both patients and staff.
Deconditioning can happen when someone becomes less active, leading to a loss of physical strength, confidence and ability to carry out everyday activities.
For some people, deconditioning may already have started before they come into hospital. It can affect independence, increase the length of time someone stays in hospital, delay discharge, and impact overall recovery.
The Deconditioning Prevention Group will explore practical ways to prevent, identify and reduce deconditioning when people are admitted to hospital. This will include supporting Quality Improvement (QI) projects that aim to help patients remain active, maintain independence and recover well.
What to expect
The DPG meetings will usually take place virtually, with occasional hybrid meetings. Meetings will be held every two months, last approximately one hour, and will report back to the Frailty Board. Support will be available to help you take part and feel comfortable contributing.
Focus of discussion
The group will provide a welcoming space for service users and staff to discuss current evidence on deconditioning from regional, national and international learning, and consider how it can be prevented in practice. The group will also hear updates on the Quality Improvement project piloting the Deconditioning Early Warning Indicator (DEWI) and help reflect on how this work can make a positive difference for patients.
